GOD
There is one true God who created and rules the universe. He has always existed as one God in the Trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
JESUS
Jesus Christ is the son of God. Jesus lived a sinless life as a human and sacrificially died on the cross for the sins of every person. After three days, He arose from the dead, showing His power over sin and death. He returned to the glory of Heaven and will one day come back to reign as King of Kings, ending sin and suffering for eternity.
HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity. He is in the world making people aware of Jesus. He also lives in every Christian from the time of salvation, offering the power to do God’s will, to understand spiritual truth, and to guide us in doing right. He also gives each believer a spiritual gift, and we seek to live under His guidance daily.
THE BIBLE
The Bible is God’s Word. Humans, guided by the Holy Spirit, wrote it, and it is without error. It is the supreme authority for salvation and every facet of life.
HUMAN LIFE, MARRIAGE, SEXUAL ACTIVITY, AND IDENTITY
Life is God’s gift to humanity, and He places great value on each life from conception till the end of life’s journey. We believe our mission is to protect, honor, and nurture each life, especially during times of high vulnerability, such as in the womb or sickness.
Based on God’s will as laid out in His Word, we can not affirm any idea that humans can choose their gender or sexual identity, which are determined biologically at birth. Therefore, we cannot affirm any marriage except between a biological man and a biological female.
We also cannot affirm popular ideas on sexual activity like promiscuity, unmarried sex, pornography, homosexuality, transgenderism, and gender fluidity.
God loves all people and wants the very best for them, and Portsmouth Baptist is made up of imperfect people who require God’s forgiveness and are striving to live and love God’s way. This happens as our faith and trust in God grow.
SALVATION
Salvation is a gift from God that is freely offered to everyone. We must be saved to enter Heaven and have eternal life. It cannot be earned; we are saved by grace through faith and complete trust in Christ.
This starts a lifelong developmental journey to a Christlike character. Baptism is a public profession of faith after one asks Christ into their life.
ETERNITY
All who trust Jesus Christ and become His followers will be reconciled to God and live with Him forever in Heaven. All people will face judgment before God on how they lived during their time on earth. Anyone who refuses to return to God’s love and mercy by putting their faith and trust in Jesus Christ will be excluded from Heaven by their life choices.
